2020 Annual Gathering

June 18, 2020 02:00 PM -June 20, 2020 04:00 PM

Sonoma State University, 1801 E Cotati Blvd., Rohnert Park, CA 94928

At Sonoma State, we stay in dorm apartments.  Each apartment has four bedrooms; each bedroom includes a full private bathroom. Towels, linens, shampoo and soap are provided.  Two of the bedrooms have one single bed each and two have two single beds each. A few of the apartments have a triple room instead of one of the double rooms; those are assigned as single rooms for our meeting. The apartment has a spacious shared living room and full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, and microwave. The kitchen does not have any dishes or cookware, so if you are planning to bring snacks or food, keep that in mind and pack accordingly.  There is no coffee maker, there are no hangers, no waste paper baskets, and no bedside lamp in the bedrooms. Some people find the beds to be hard and bring some kind of extra padding.

Please be aware that parking is strictly controlled on the SSU campus, so to avoid a parking ticket, please park only in assigned lots and leave your parking permit on your dashboard. The parking permit will specify which lots you may use. Lot D, in front of the Student Center, is not a lot we are allowed to use. Any other lot is covered by the parking permit. The campus police will be lenient when we are arriving, so you will have time to check in and pick up your parking permit without worrying about getting a ticket in the meantime. However, if you do get a parking ticket you may contest it via email by sending a picture of your parking permit and it will be dismissed.

We are once again offering a full suite price for churches or groups that want to choose who is in their apartment. You must specify which six people are in the suite and which are in double rooms or single rooms.

Theme: Elephant in the Room

We are a people of covenant.

The Annual Gathering is the assembly of members of the Conference, which consists of all Local Churches and Authorized Ministers, coming together to be about the mutual work of the church. As the highest legislative body of the Conference, the Annual Gathering adopts resolutions for consideration by our members in their discernment and ministry.

Annual Gathering serves as the legal annual meeting required of incorporated nonprofit organizations in the State of California.

As a covenantal polity, the Annual Gathering speaks “to, not for” its members. Unlike hierarchical or centralized church structures, its decisions are not binding on Local Churches but are intended to be considered with highest regard by them.

Decisions of a constitutional nature that affect the entire United Church of Christ, as adopted by a General Synod, are referred back to Conferences for ratification. And measures being submitted for consideration by General Synod are adopted by Conferences. This mutuality reflects how ministry in the United Church of Christ is best understood as a series of overlapping circles rather than a vertical ladder.

Presiding over the Annual Gathering, as is the case in many Local Churches, is an elected individual called a Moderator. Along with the Vice Moderator, the Moderator is an officer of the Conference and runs the meeting with a measured, respectful tone that seeks to build consensus rather than victory.

The annual budget and slate of leaders of the various Committees is approved by the Annual Gathering.
